Types of Slots
*******************************************************************
Multipliers
These machines can accept multiple-coin bet. You can play
from one coin to 5 and sometimes even more. The size of your winning combination
is in direct proportion to your bet. Double coin bet doubles your win in
dollars, triple bet triples it etc. Exception can only be a jackpot – a highest
combination paid on a maximum bet. The jackpot amount is often higher than
direct proportion would deliver it. Your jackpot for one coin can be 800 coins,
but if you hit the same combination with 2 coins you can get 2000 coins etc.
Single coin machines practically disappeared from a casino scene. You’ll have
better odds of finding them in a museum rather than in a modern casino.
Multipliers with a wild symbol
They are multiple-coin machines, which have a “wild” symbol
among other symbols. Wild symbol substitutes for any other symbol. If you have 2
bars on two reels and a third one shows a wild symbol, you have a winning
combination of 3 bars instead of two. More often than not a wild symbol also
increases the size of a winning combination. You can find everywhere machines
with wild symbols in the shapes of diamonds and ellipses, which show the rate of
increase. Double diamond will double your winnings, triple will triple etc. If
you catch two wild symbols, – for ex. two 5 times pay diamonds – your payoff
will be multiplied by 25 times.
Wild symbols add a lot of excitement to the game. Needless to say, multipliers
with wild symbol are extremely popular machines.
Multiple
pay-line slots (multi-liners)
These slots have few payoff lines instead of a traditional
one. Normally there are 3 horizontal payoff lines – one in the middle, one above
it and one below it. Also, you can find machines with two additional diagonal
pay-lines, which crisscross
machine’s window giving you a total of 5 lines to watch for a winning
combination. As a rule, you have to activate those pay-lines by playing a
corresponding amount of coins. To put 3 lines in action will cost you 3 coins
instead of one; for all 5 lines you’ll need a maximum bet of 5 coins.
Buy-your-pay
That type of a machine has one payoff line. They are
multiple-coin machines with different winning combinations for different size
bets. If you play one coin only you can’t win a jackpot and other big
combinations. Blazing Sevens is a typical example of a buy-your-pay slot – you
can win a jackpot for 3 lined up 7s only if you play maximum bet of 3 coins.
Progressives
They are multiple-coin machines with a jackpot determined
by a number of coins swallowed from the players since the last time it was hit.
In result, a jackpot amount is constantly changing with every single coin
played. Jackpot is shown not in number of coins, but as a dollar amount usually
displayed on the top of a machine. Casinos often connect many progressives into
one system with a common jackpot, which can be hit from any machine in the
group. This way casinos can offer the players a chance (a very slim one) at
multimillion jackpots – “Megabucks”. First such jackpot was offered in 1986 when
many progressive dollar slots in different casinos were combined into one
circle.
Video slots started to gain popularity in 1980s. There is a large variety of them. They don’t have spinning reels of traditional machines, which actually spin. All you see is a computer simulation of spinning reels on a video screen. Many video slots offer the players a number of popular games like craps, poker, blackjack and keno. Video slots like traditional slots also exist as multi-liners, multipliers or buy-your-pay types.
